We prioritize the well-being of your staff and visitors.

Why should you do a slip test?

Slip-and-fall accidents rank among the most common property accidents in Canada. The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) reported 162,222 unintentional slip-and-fall injuries

There is an expectation from Health and Safety auditors that you understand how your floor should perform (when first laid) and how it does perform once in use. Over time various factors influence the performance of a floor, such as a cleaning regime, food, grit and dirt brought inside over time and the build-up of these types of contaminants can drastically impact the floors performance and slip resistance.

PSHSA Compliance requirements

Everyone has a role to play in preventing slips, trips, and falls in the workplace. Ontario businesses must meet regulatory requirements set under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), which can vary widely by industry and sector. Workers have responsibilities, too.

Employers must:

  • take every reasonable precaution in the circumstances for the protection of workers

  • provide information, instruction, and supervision to workers to protect the health and safety of workers

  • acquaint workers and supervisors with any slip, trip, or fall hazard in the work and in the handling, storage, and use of any article, device, or equipment

These duties could involve identifying the risk of job-specific hazards, establishing controls to eliminate or reduce workers’ exposure to hazards, or ensuring control measures in place are working.

Slip Resistance and Surface Requirements (AODA)

Under the Design of Public Spaces Standard (O. Reg. 191/11, Part IV.1), new or redeveloped public spaces must meet specific surface standards to prevent slips:

  • Slip-Resistant Surfaces: Outdoor paths, trails, and ramps must be designed to be firm, stable, and slip-resistant under dry conditions.

The Occupiers' Liability Act

The Occupiers' Liability Act holds individuals or organizations in physical possession of a premise (occupiers) responsible for ensuring safety.

  • Duty of Care: An occupier of premises owes a duty to take such care as in all the circumstances of the case is reasonable to see that persons entering on the premises, and the property brought on the premises by those persons are reasonably safe while on the premises.

  • Parking Lots: All public parking areas must include slip-resistant surfaces and, where applicable, curb ramps that align with the direction of travel.
